Covenant of Mayors in Sub-Saharan Africa Office, together with the Secretariat of Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy (GCoM) and the CES-Med project, is co-organising a focus session on Africa’s challenges in tackling climate and energy at a local level.
The session will take place during the Climate Chance World Summit in Agadir, Morocco from 11- 13 September 2017. It will have a particular focus on the Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) and will inform on the official ceremony for the first signatories from the region, to be held in Abidjan, Cote D’Ivoire on November 27th, 2017.

CoM SSA Mayors spearhead sub-Saharan Africa's local climate action agenda at COP28
Amid the scorching temperatures marking 2023 as the hottest year on record, the Covenant of Mayors in Sub-Saharan Africa (CoM SSA) showcased unwavering determination and vigour at COP28 in Dubai. The landmark event, which spanned from November 29 to December 14, culminated in the UAE Consensus, which includes: a call to transition away from fossil fuels, a framework for the Global Goal on Adaptation as well as unprecedented references to multilevel action. Despite these strides, the Consensus fell short of closing the climate ambition and implementation gaps, underscoring the critical role of subnational governments in charting a sustainable course for the future.

Genuine collaboration critical for African cities to combat devastating climate change
We need to take a long, hard look at the state of our planet and map a better course for our future. We need genuine collaboration, true inclusivity and authentic commitment to decrease the significant gap between promises and climate action. The recent Africa Climate Summit and UNFCCC Africa Climate Week, together with the Global Stocktake Report, highlighted that there is an urgent need to scale up a rigorous all-of-economy, all-of-society approach which leads to significant climate action this decade in order to limit global warming to 1.5°C.
