The Covenant of Mayors in Sub-Saharan Africa supports signatory cities to reach their climate change and sustainable energy access goals by providing practical support, technical assistance and access to partnerships.

The initiative is pushing the boundaries of climate action and providing platforms for leaders to connect to empower signatories to become healthy, green, climate resilient cities.

Why you should join CoM SSA

  • CoM SSA is the regional chapter of the Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy, making signatory cities part of the largest network of cities taking climate action in the world.

  • We share best practices from the Sub-Saharan Africa region and develop resources to turn our signatories’ climate plans into their realities.

  • Signatories, with CoM SSA’s support, are developing Sustainable Energy Access and Climate Action Plans to unlock climate finance and to accelerate climate action.

  • Build valuable partnerships with other cities, funders and financiers, national government, the private sector, civil society and researchers and academics.

Who is eligible

Any subnational government, situated in Sub-Saharan Africa, can join CoM SSA irrespective of its size and level of progress in climate commitments and action.

How to join CoM SSA

  • Council approval/resolution to join the CoM SSA in accordance with the CoM SSA Political Commitment Document. Download the Political Commitment Document below.

  • Fill in the Registration Form with key information. Email the Registration Form and the Council approval/resolution to the CoM SSA Technical Helpdesk: helpdesk@comssa.org Download the registration form below.

  • Local authorities will then receive an email from the CoM SSA Technical Helpdesk to confirm their participation and to provide more guidance on the next steps for their Sustainable Energy Access and Climate Action Plan (SEACAP) elaboration, implementation and monitoring. Signatories then begin their SEACAP journey with us!
