Abuja and CoM SSA formalise their collaboration to boost climate commitment

In February 2024, the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), in partnership with CoM SSA’s co-implementing partner, the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), signed a Letter of Collaboration that paves the way for significant advancements in urban sustainability and smart energy solutions. The agreement establishes a cooperative framework for exploring alternative energy sources, emphasising the Urban Smart Energy (USE) product and the Abuja Urban Lab, focusing on enhancing waste management governance.

This collaboration embodies a comprehensive vision that integrates the USE initiative and the Abuja Urban Lab as two pivotal components working to advance urban sustainability in Abuja. At its core, the partnership aims to harness the potential of renewable energy and enhance energy efficiency within city-owned buildings. Specifically, it focuses on integrating solar-powered systems in critical facilities, such as primary healthcare centres and markets, as part of the USE initiative. Simultaneously, the Abuja Urban Lab seeks to establish a comprehensive and efficient waste management system. By fostering collaboration across a broad spectrum of stakeholders—including the public sector, informal and formal private sectors, academia, and non-governmental organisations—the project aims to create a sustainable model that can be replicated across the city.

CoM SSA’s partnership with AMAC began in February 2021 with the development of a Sustainable Energy Access and Climate Action Plan (SEACAP). The successful launch of this plan in July 2022 marked a significant milestone in their collaboration, laying the groundwork for ongoing efforts to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions and reduce energy costs in the city.

Hajiya Hannatu Ibrahim, AMAC Head of Environment, remarked, "Reflecting on the strides we have made together, from the pivotal activities under the SEACAP in 2021 to the successful launch of the Urban Lab in December 2023, it's clear that our collaboration is a beacon of progress and innovation. We anticipate strengthening our relationship with CoM SSA and finding new opportunities that promise to further our shared vision for sustainable development." Likewise, Honourable Christopher Zakka Maikalangu, AMAC Executive Chairman, expressed, "AMAC stands firmly with CoM SSA in the mission to transform Abuja into a model of urban sustainability."

This partnership demonstrates AMAC’s commitment to sustainable energy solutions and climate action, leading the charge for sustainable urban development. CoM SSA supports signatory cities in their climate and energy goals, offering practical support, technical guidance, and access to strategic partnerships.
