Climate Finance
CoM SSA have been working hard with partners over the last three years. This MAP shows who many cities are signatories’ which now counts more than 200 cities at the closure of Phase II in November 2019.
This growing interest (201 cities) resulted from the intensification of CoM SSA participation to Pan-African and international events, such as Africities and COPs, but also important regional or local events, such as the African Climate Week or country specific events that includes work with National Associations of Local Government .

Eight years on: evaluating the Kampala Climate Change Action Plan
On June 7th 2024, a workshop was organised by the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) to present the findings of the Kampala Climate Change Action Plan (KCCAP) evaluation. The KCCAP is a strategy developed by the Kampala Capital City Authority in 2016 to address climate change challenges and opportunities. It covers the following areas: energy, urban mobility, land use planning, and eco-practice. The plan aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 22% by 2030, enhance adaptive capacity, mainstream climate change response in city services, promote low-carbon development, increase stakeholder awareness, and foster city-to-city cooperation on climate change issues. The KCCAP, developed with the financial support of AFD and the technical support of Expertise France, is a transversal framework for mainstreaming climate response in all KCCA mandates and services.

A year in review: CoM SSA innovations and collaborations propelled local climate action to new heights in 2023
The Covenant of Mayors in Sub-Saharan Africa initiative (CoM SSA), a European Union action, reached new heights in 2023. Seven Sustainable Energy Access and Climate Action Plans (SEACAPs) were launched, over 50 climate and energy badges were awarded, CoM SSA Mayors led the sub-Saharan Africa climate action agenda at regional and global forums, and CoM SSA grew to over 360 signatories.
