Maintaining its steadfast commitment to sustainable urban development and building on the success of the initial launch in December 2023, the Abuja Urban Lab has hosted a feedback workshop, marking a crucial step forward in ongoing efforts to improve the waste management governance system in Abuja.
The workshop commenced with a comprehensive review of the Urban Lab initiative, detailing the achievements and challenges since its inception. Participants delved into the initiative’s objectives and vision for the future, emphasising the need for strategic partnerships between government, private sector, academia, civil society organisations, and the informal sector.
From December 2023 to July 2024, the Urban Lab recorded several milestones and gathered valuable insights into waste management practices. Milestone events included a city-to-city exchange with the Lagos State government, engagement with the Waste Pickers Association of Nigeria (WAPAN), Abuja Environmental Protection Board (AEPB), and the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), as well as a visit of the Olusosun waste dump site in Lagos. These were all shared during group work. The workshop featured a panel discussion titled "Lessons from Lagos City-to-City Exchange", where esteemed speakers from AMAC, AEPB, WAPAN, Association of Women Town Planners in Nigeria, and youth groups discussed best practices for Abuja moving forward.
In the words of Abiodun Essiet, Special Adviser to the Honourable Chairman of AMAC, “This workshop brings together various stakeholders, including government institutions, academia, private sector organisations, and community groups to give feedback and brainstorm on the Urban Lab. It also serves as a testing ground for innovative ideas, strategies, and technologies related to the establishment of a robust governance structure and infrastructure projects in Abuja.”
The Urban Lab Feedback Workshop concluded with a presentation on policy analysis and review, outlining a roadmap for future policy development and implementation. As Tpl Rekiya Fache, President of the Association of Women Town Planners in Nigeria, stated, “This workshop provides a crucial framework for developing effective and inclusive policies that will improve waste management practices in Abuja.”
As urban areas worldwide grapple with increasing waste management challenges, the insights gained from this workshop will guide Abuja towards a more climate-resilient future and address the global impact of local waste management practices.
