The Covenant of Mayors in Sub-Saharan Africa Secretariat is partnering with ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability to offer a training session on setting Science-based Targets for African cities.

Science-based targets provide a clearly-defined pathway for cities to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in line with the latest climate science and the goals of the Paris Agreement. By setting such targets, cities help to prevent the worst impacts of climate change, future-proof development and contribute to efforts to limit warming to 1.5°C.  

The training will introduce science-based targets, methods that can be used for setting these targets in African cities and the application of these methods to develop targets. The session will also cover how this target-setting process aligns with climate action planning processes in local governments, including the development of Sustainable Energy Access and Climate Action Plans (SEACAPs) under CoM SSA. An introduction to the CoM SSA Technical Helpdesk will be given, as well as an explanation of the Cities Race to Zero and Cities Race to Resilience.  

The training session will be offered online in English, French and Portuguese.
