ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability (ICLEI) is the leading global network of more than 1,500 cities, towns and regions in 108 countries committed to building a sustainable future. By helping the ICLEI Network to become sustainable, low-carbon, ecomobile, resilient, biodiverse, resource-efficient, healthy and happy, with a green economy and smart infrastructure, we impact over 25% of the global urban population.
The ICLEI Network is served by 18 offices worldwide with over 300 staff. We envision a world of sustainable cities and towns that confront the realities of urbanization, adapt to economic and demographic trends and prepare for the impacts of climate change and other urban challenges. This is why ICLEI unites local, regional and national governments in creating positive change through collective learning, exchange and capacity building.
ICLEI’s multidisciplinary team of experts develops and applies practical strategies, tools and methodologies that bring about tangible local progress worldwide. The network forges strategic partnerships with business and financial institutions to strengthen results and bring about global change with a coalition of able partners. ICLEI also works to ensure that strong policy environments support local action through its national and global advocacy advancements.
Supporting the implementation of CoM SSA, the ICLEI World Secretariat leads on political advocacy and networking to improve institutional frameworks, offering guidance on effective vertical integration / multi-level governance that is needed to optimize communication and coordination among all levels of government with planning, implementation and reporting of climate action. ICLEI supports knowledge production, and provides a range of existing guidance and tools to help local governments with climate action. It is actively establishing cooperation and synergies with relevant initiatives (Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate & Energy, Urban-LEDS II, etc) to optimize support to cities, either by scaling up local climate action or by joint capacity development activities. ICLEI Africa Secretariat supports political advocacy processes and contribute to capacity building and technical support to CoM SSA cities.
