Douala’s energy transition opens doors for investment
With rising energy demand and only 75% of Cameroon's urban population having access to electricity (World Bank, 2025), Douala is accelerating efforts to expand clean energy solutions. Over the past seven months, CoM SSA through its Urban Smart Energy (USE) product, in collaboration with municipal leaders, energy experts, legal advisors, and financial specialists, has assessed the feasibility of renewable energy and energy efficiency projects across nine municipal sites. Their findings lay the groundwork for a cost-effective urban energy system and a strong case for future investment.

Cameroon and Kenya Strengthen Climate Commitment: Cities Sign Memorandums of Understanding
Cities in Cameroon and Kenya have taken remarkable strides toward securing a sustainable energy future by formally signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Covenant of Mayors in Sub-Saharan Africa (CoM SSA) in June and August 2023, respectively. These formal agreements outline the terms of cooperation between the cities and CoM SSA's partner, Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), to establish a collaborative framework for exploring alternative energy sources through the Urban Smart Energy (USE) process and focusing on nature-based solutions (NbS) for climate adaptation.

How can cities promote renewable energy projects? A training with Cameroonian CoM SSA cities
As part of the cooperation between FEICOM (Special Council Support Fund for Mutual Assistance) and CoM SSA, a training on municipal solar projects was organised in November 2022 in Douala with CoM SSA signatories across the country. Participants included Mayors and technical staff from the 14 City Councils in Cameroon along with FEICOM executives.

Development of a sustainable public lighting project
In 2022, the Urban Community of Douala (CUD) therefore called on the initiative of the CoM SSA – through Proparco and AFD – to financesupport for the structuring of a program to rehabilitate and extend its public lighting system.
